01 / STUDIO CULTURE

The studio runs 10:00 to 18:30, and we mean it. Late nights happen before a submission and are made up as time off afterwards; if they are happening any other week, we have mismanaged the programme and that is our problem to fix, not yours to absorb. Work is reviewed openly at the big table on Tuesday mornings, which is uncomfortable for about a month and then becomes the most useful hour of the week.

We pay Council of Architecture registration fees and the annual IIA subscription for everyone eligible, and we give four days a year for site visits to buildings that are not ours — an allowance people use far less than they should. What we look for that a portfolio rarely shows is whether you can explain a decision out loud to someone who disagrees with it, which is most of what this job actually is.

    Architect

    Location
    Pune — in studio, four days a week

    To run one house and one workplace project from design development through to completion, reporting to Nachiket. This is a documentation-heavy role with real site responsibility from the first month — you would be the person the contractor phones.

    Responsibilities

    • Running two live projects from design development through construction documentation
    • Coordinating our structural and MEP consultants, and holding the drawing register
    • Site visits every fortnight through construction, weekly through the finishing trades
    • Reviewing contractor shop drawings and issuing clarification details

    What we need

    • Council of Architecture registration
    • Demonstrable construction documentation experience — bring a set, not only renders
    • Fluency in the drawing software you already use; we will not ask you to switch
    • Enough Marathi or Hindi to hold a conversation on site
    • A portfolio under 15 MB, as a single PDF, to studio@sectionandground.in
    • Include at least one construction detail you drew yourself, at the scale you drew it
    • A short note on which project on this site you would want to have worked on, and why
    • We reply to every application within three weeks, including the unsuccessful ones

    Architectural Assistant

    Drawing production across all stages, working directly alongside Aditi or Nachiket rather than through a team leader. You would be on site within your first two months and expected to have an opinion by your sixth.

    Responsibilities

    • Drawing production from schematic design through to construction documentation
    • Physical and digital model making — most projects here start as a section model
    • Assisting on site visits and writing the visit notes

    What we need

    • B.Arch, or in the final year of one
    • Hand drawing ability — we will ask to see a sketchbook, and we do mean a sketchbook
    • A willingness to be corrected in public, because that is how the studio reviews work
    • A portfolio under 15 MB, as a single PDF, to studio@sectionandground.in

    Internship

    ₹18,000 per month. We do not offer unpaid internships.

    Six-month placements, taken twice a year in January and July, two interns at a time. Interns here work on live projects rather than competition boards, and leave with drawings that were issued.

    Responsibilities

    • Working alongside the project team on live projects
    • Drawing, model making and documentation
    • One site visit a fortnight from the second month

    What we need

    • Enrolled in an accredited architecture programme
    • Available for the full six months — we cannot take shorter placements
    • A portfolio under 15 MB, as a single PDF, to studio@sectionandground.in
    • State the dates you are available and your college's placement requirements
